~ MIDDLE EASTERN SCALE THEORY - includes subtleties of the microtonal systems of Egypt, Syria, and Turkey; for musicians and music students.

~ TAKSIM: MUSICAL IMPROVISATIONS ON A SCALE - Lecture-demo, listening of samples. Recommended for Oriental Dancers & musicians.

~ INTRODUCTION TO MIDDLE EASTERN SCALES FOR THE ORIENTALE DANCER - Lecture/Demo; also for the general public.

~ MIDDLE EASTERN RHYTHMS AND PERCUSSION - lesson in technique of the darbuka or dumbek (hourglass-shaped hand-drum) and riqq (classical tambourine). The class will cover rhythms from Arabic countries, Turkey, Armenia, Greece, and flamenco.

DANCE (with live music):

~ DANSE ORIENTALE TECHNIQUE - This is available at beginner, intermediate, or advanced level. The dance includes isolation movements such as circles, figure eights, and undulations as well as the faster, more rhythmic hip work. It may also include veil work and playing zills (finger cymbals).

~ TURKISH ROM 9/8 - This workshop includes rhythm break down, zills with various rhythm patterns, skirt work, Rom style gestures, choreography, and improvisation.

~ RHYTHMS AND ZILLS - Students work with 5 beat and 7 beat rhythm patterns to create a zill/dance solo. The class includes structured improvisation & choreography to these rhythms seldom used by Oriental dancers.

~ BENDIR DANCE - Students learn to play bendir (frame drum) and dance simultaneously. First, students learn to play basic 6 beat patterns on the bendir, later adding dance movements while playing to create a solo or group piece. Students will need a 9" to 11" frame drum.

~ A TOUCH OF FLAMENCO FOR THE MIDDLE EASTERN DANCER - includes flamenco arm movements added to Middle Eastern torso work, and flamenco skirt & fan work, with a choreography with fan to tsamiko (Greek) rhythm.

~ BULERIA MORA - Students learn an original Moorish flamenco dance style in 12 beat rhythm. Class includes explanation of rhythm, palmas (hand clapping), flamenco arm movements with Middle Eastern torso work, minor footwork with bare feet, and Bulería choreography.

~ VEILWORK - technique, improvisation, choreography. Double veil class also available.

~ ARMENIAN WOMEN'S DANCE - choreography.

~ MOROCCAN SHIKHAT - This is the dance of the professional performers of Morocco. This workshop may also include introduction to GUEDRA, a trance dance of blessing from the Blue People of the Sahara, a Tuareg tribe.

~ EGYPTIAN CANE DANCE - This dance comes from a sparring martial exercise which is now a performance art. This workshop may include choreography with one or two canes.
