MIDDLE EASTERN
DANCE CLASSES - BROWARD, FL DANSE ORIENTALE AND ITS INFLUENCES: HISTORY, CULTURE, TECHNIQUE, AND MUSIC Myriam Eli from Harmonic Motion (www.harmonicmotion.com) offers this intensive study based on the credited course she taught for five years at Florida International University, Department of Theater and Dance in Miami, FL. She incorporates additional material from the Folklife Apprenticeship award she received as Master Teacher from the Florida Department of State, Division of Historical Resources. Material includes historical and cultural background as well as technique in Danse Orientale and several folk forms that may have contributed to its rich movement vocabulary (see below for details). Class time includes lectures, discussions, video viewing and critique, dance technique, choreography, improvisation, percussion, and occasionally live traditional musical accompaniment. COURSE DESCRIPTION: PURPOSE: (1) for Orientale/Middle Eastern/Belly dancers who desire a deeper study and broader perspective of this ethnically based art form; (2) to help the dancer become more aware of her/his dance heritage and lineage; (3) to help the dancer discover her/his historical place, significance, and influence in this dance field. LEVEL: intermediate to professional / LOCATION: Broward County, FL, USA (please contact instructor) CLASS SIZE: minimum 4 students CLASS DAYS/ TIMES/ FREQUENCY: determined by the instructor and students who are ready to register. Once registered, students commit to attending all classes for continuity of study. PART 1 - 10 classes - 25 hours / PART 2 - 10 classes - 25 hours / NOTE: Part I is a prerequisite for Part II (no obligation to take both). This gives a chronological perspective to the history and a progression on the technique. COST OF PART 1 (STARTING SOON): $400 payable in full upon registration. Financial aid might be available.
